Airport transfers to and from La Spezia and the Cinque Terre

Prime Drive drives to and from ten airports, from Pisa to Rome. Pisa is the closest: 89 km (55 miles) by road, about 1 hour 30 minutes on a normal day, not the 63 km straight line other sites quote. Your driver tracks your flight and waits with your name on a tablet, 60 free minutes at airports.

Which airports do you serve?

Ten airports, from Pisa an hour and a half away to Rome Fiumicino more than five hours away. Milan means both of its airports.

Road distances are measured along the road, not in a straight line. The drive times are what a normal day looks like, not the best possible run. They are estimates, not promises.

AirportBy road from La SpeziaOn a normal dayThe train alternative
Pisa (PSA)89 km (55 miles)about 1 h 30Regionale 74–86 min, Intercity 54–73, fastest 42–53 — with multi-hour gaps between them
Florence (FLR)142 km (88 miles)about 1 h 50 – 2 h 10Five direct regional trains a day, all 2 h 27, all leaving between 11:53 and 15:53
Genoa (GOA)114 km (71 miles)about 1 h 45 – 2 h23 a day from Genova Piazza Principe (61–158 min), but only five a day from the airport’s own station (146–177 min)
Milan Malpensa (MXP)272 km (169 miles)about 3 h 30 – 4 hMalpensa Express 51 min, then eight direct from Milano Centrale, 191–207 min — roughly 4 h 30 – 5 h in total
Milan Linate (LIN)220 km (137 miles)about 2 h 45 – 3 h 15Into Milano Centrale, then as above
Rome Fiumicino (FCO)407 km (253 miles)about 5 h 30 – 6 hLeonardo Express 32 min, then ten direct from Roma Termini, 185–301 min — roughly 4 h 15 – 6 h in total

Bologna, Bergamo, Turin, Verona and Parma are driven too, and they are missing from the table on purpose. No public source measures the road time from the airport for any of those five. The figures that exist measure the city center, which is a different journey, and printing one here as though it were the airport would be the sort of small lie that gets found out on the day. Verona shows what is at stake: two reputable sources put the distance 38 km apart, because one routes it all on motorway and the other does not. Ask for a quote and you get a real time for the airport you are flying into.

Which airport should I fly into for the Cinque Terre?

Pisa, when the flights work.

The honest orientation first: no airport in this region has a nonstop flight to North America. Pisa had one — Delta to New York JFK — and it ended in 2016. Florence physically cannot have one: its runway is 1,560 m and it is limited to aircraft up to the size of the A320NEO. So an American, Canadian or Australian traveler almost always arrives on a connecting flight into Pisa or Florence, or lands at Fiumicino or Malpensa and faces a three-to-five-hour onward leg. British travelers have a genuine choice of direct low-cost flights into Pisa.

Read that way, the ten airports fall into a simple order:

How long is the drive from Pisa airport, really?

89.4 km by road. Free-flow routing, with no traffic anywhere, gives 75 minutes. A normal day is about 1 hour 30 minutes.

There is a number that travels the internet and it is wrong. “Pisa airport is 63 km from La Spezia, 56 minutes” appears on transfer site after transfer site. 63 to 66 km is the straight-line distance — the flight of a bird, not the drive of a car. The road goes 89.4 km, because it runs inland around the Apuan Alps and then back out to the coast.

We publish the larger number because it is the true one, and because it sets an expectation that survives contact with the day. Prime Drive will not promise a one-hour transfer from Pisa airport. Anyone who does is quoting a straight line.

Is the train cheaper than a car from Pisa airport?

Cheaper, yes. The honest question is what it costs you in time and effort, so here is the arithmetic rather than an opinion.

Take a family of four standing in the Pisa arrivals hall at 13:30 with four cases. The timetable below is Trenitalia’s own, read on a Monday in September 2026 — one weekday in one timetable period, so re-check yours, but the gaps in it are structural rather than bad luck.

StepTime
PisaMover from the airport to Pisa Centralearrive about 13:50
Regionale, Pisa Centrale to La Spezia Centrale, dep 14:06arrive 15:20
Wait at La Spezia and cross to another platform with the cases35–60 min
Cinque Terre Express, dep 16:20Vernazza 16:40, Monterosso 16:45
By trainMonterosso 16:18–16:45, Vernazza 16:40. Three boardings, two changes, one underpass with the bags
By car, from the same 13:30 startMonterosso about 15:15–15:30, Vernazza about 15:25–15:45, before loading time and before traffic

The car saves roughly 1 to 1½ hours to Monterosso, and it removes two changes and a platform change through the underpass with the luggage. It does not save four hours, and we are not going to tell you it does.

Two structural facts that decide more than the headline time:

  • There are five direct trains a day from Pisa Centrale to Monterosso, all Intercity: 05:42, 08:55, 13:39, 13:47 and 17:42. To Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore there are none — not few, none. Every one of those villages needs a change at La Spezia onto the Cinque Terre Express.
  • The change at La Spezia is not a walk across the platform. Trains from Pisa arrived on platforms 1, 4, 5 and 6; the Cinque Terre Express left from platform 2 in 16 of 18 observed departures. A platform change through the underpass is effectively unavoidable.

On cost, one floor can be stated without guessing: four PisaMover singles at €6.50 come to €26.00, and the Cinque Terre supplement for two adults and two children aged 4–11 in the middle season band adds €15.00. That is €41.00 before a single base train fare, and the base fares are the part we are not going to estimate for you.

How long will you wait if my flight is late?

60 minutes at airports. 15 minutes everywhere else. Included in every pickup, not sold as an extra.

We ask for your flight number when you book and we follow the flight, so a delay or an early landing is already known before you walk into the arrivals hall.

That 60-minute allowance is worth putting in context: it is exactly the published benchmark of the largest international chauffeur companies, and it is far more generous than the 15 or 20 minutes a taxi rank gives you.

There is a detail most transfer sites blur, which is how that hour is counted. It is put in writing with the quote — when the allowance starts, and what applies once it has run out — before there is a booking. That way the answer in your inbox is the one that holds on the day, rather than a sentence on a web page.

Why is getting out of the airport slower than it used to be?

Because the border itself changed. The EU Entry/Exit System began its progressive launch on 12 October 2025 and has been in full operation since 10 April 2026. Every non-EU visitor — every American, British, Canadian and Australian passenger — is now fingerprinted and photographed at the border instead of receiving a passport stamp.

We are not going to put a number of minutes on passport control, because nobody publishes one and a plausible invented figure is worse than none. What can be said is this: the gap between wheels-down and the arrivals hall is longer and less predictable than it was two years ago, which is precisely why the flight number and the 60-minute allowance matter more now than they did.

Where exactly will the driver meet me?

With your name on a tablet, not a folded paper sign.

Where the driver may physically stand is set by each airport, and the rules differ enough that one blanket sentence would be misleading. What the airport operators themselves publish:

Pisa (PSA)

Private-hire vehicles use the short-stay parking. Reserved loading bays for private-hire cars at Pisa were announced by one trade association in March 2026 and publicly denied by the airport operator, so we make no claim to a reserved stall at Pisa.

Florence (FLR)

Short-stay parking at P1 and P2, with a favorable first-quarter-hour arrangement reported for private-hire operators. That report is second-hand and from 2022, so it is background rather than something to rely on.

Genoa (GOA)

The airport published nothing we could verify about private-hire access during research.

Milan Malpensa (MXP)

To reach the Terminal 1 arrivals area, a private-hire firm must hold the legal requisites and display its license badge — license number and issuing municipality — on the rear number plate. The fifteen-minute area at T1 arrivals is monitored by plate camera, and the free waiting area between the terminals is capped at 60 minutes.

Milan Linate (LIN)

Short-stay on the arrivals level. The P2 Executive parking lot is free for the first 20 minutes.

Rome Fiumicino (FCO)

The airport is explicit: a private-hire car must be requested in advance and cannot be accessed directly from the taxi waiting area. Vehicles wait in the area in front of the airport exit, and the airport tells passengers to check the meeting point agreed with their driver before traveling. It also warns, in its own words, that other vehicles touting in the arrivals area may be operating without a rental permit. That warning is worth reading twice, and it is the airport’s, not ours.

There is no entry above for Bologna, Bergamo, Turin, Verona or Parma, because we have nothing verified to put in one.

We do not claim a legal right to stand inside any arrivals hall. Your meeting point is confirmed in writing when the booking is agreed, and you will have the driver’s mobile number before you fly.

Do you drive to the airport as well as from it?

Yes, and the departure direction is the one people underestimate.

The waiting allowance on a departure pickup is 15 minutes rather than 60, because there is no flight to track on the way out. Ligurian and Tuscan motorways are not predictable in July and August, and the drive to Pisa is not the 63 km somebody read online. Leaving enough margin is a conversation we would rather have when you book than at 06:00 on the day.

We do not print a recommended pickup time for a given departure, because a figure written here would be an editorial estimate rather than what a driver does. The pickup time is agreed with you when you book, against the flight and the date.

Can you collect us from a hotel in a Cinque Terre village?

Yes, and where you are staying changes the arithmetic in a way that is easy to state:

  • Riomaggiore adds a flat 15.2 km and 20 to 21 minutes to every destination, with almost no variation. That is the SP 370 coast road, not the motorway, and it is the same penalty whether you are heading for Pisa or for Milan.
  • Monterosso is asymmetric. Going east towards Tuscany and the A1 it costs 30 to 32 minutes more than starting in La Spezia. Going west it is 3 to 4 minutes faster and about 15 km shorter, because the road joins the A12 at Carrodano-Levanto and skips the La Spezia spur entirely.

On access, Monterosso is the exception as well. We obtain the permits and drive in as far as Piazza Garibaldi, and we can move along the seafront, so the car sets you down in the middle of the village rather than at its edge. In Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Corniglia the car reaches the edge and the last stretch is on foot, as it is for everyone. That matters most with luggage, and it is covered village by village on the Cinque Terre by car.

Can we stop at the Leaning Tower on the way?

Yes, and arrival day is when that stop costs you least: the Piazza dei Miracoli is minutes from Pisa airport, so it happens before the drive north instead of becoming a separate day later.

Where a vehicle may stop is the part worth knowing. A private car sets down on Via Cammeo or Via Andrea Pisano, about 500 m from the Piazza dei Miracoli — five to seven minutes on flat pavement, with no steps. A tourist coach cannot: coaches are barred from Via Cammeo and directed to the free park on Via Pietrasantina about 2 km out, which costs a coach party a shuttle or a half-hour walk at each end of the visit.

That is the whole of the claim, and it is the one you can check for yourself. Access inside an Italian historic center is decided comune by comune, so there is no blanket rule that puts one kind of car ahead of another.

How much luggage fits?

Up to 8 passengers per vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz. That is the capacity Prime Drive publishes, and it is the one we will state.

Cases are a different question, and the answer depends on how many of those seats are in use: eight people and eight large suitcases are not the same load as four and four. Tell us the party and the luggage when you ask for a quote and you get a straight answer for your own group, rather than a round number here that would only hold with the back row empty.

Where else can a driver take you

An airport run is one of several things the same car does. Long-distance transfers between cities and full days out with a driver are part of the same service, on the same terms: what we drive, and what is included.

Questions about this trip

How far is Pisa airport from La Spezia?

89 km by road, about 1 hour 30 minutes on a normal day. The 63 km figure repeated across transfer sites is the straight-line distance between the two places, not a road distance, and the hour it implies is not a drive anyone can make. Free-flow routing gives 75 minutes with no traffic at all, which is a floor rather than a promise.

How long will you wait if my flight is delayed?

60 minutes at airports and 15 minutes elsewhere, included in every pickup. We ask for your flight number when you book and follow the flight, so a delay or an early landing is known before you reach the arrivals hall. How that hour is counted, and what applies once it has run out, is set out in writing with the quote, before anything is booked.

Which airport should I fly into for the Cinque Terre?

Pisa, if the flights work. It is the closest of the ten and the only one in the region with a real choice of direct low-cost flights from the UK. No airport in this region has a nonstop flight to North America, so travelers from the US, Canada and Australia usually connect into Pisa or Florence, or land at Rome Fiumicino or Milan Malpensa and face a long onward leg.

Will the driver be waiting inside the arrivals hall?

The driver waits with your name on a tablet, and the exact spot depends on the airport. Each airport sets its own rules for where a private-hire vehicle may stand, and some are strict about it, so we claim no right to stand inside any arrivals hall. Your meeting point is agreed in writing when the booking is confirmed, and you have the driver's mobile number before you fly.

Do you drive to Bologna, Bergamo, Turin, Verona and Parma airports?

Yes, all five are airports Prime Drive serves. We do not publish a drive time for any of them, because no public source gives an airport-specific figure and a city-center figure is not the same journey. Ask for a quote and you will be given a real time for the airport you are flying into.
