Where the day goes

  • La Spezia

Pickup at your address. The road is motorway almost the whole way - the A15 link down to the A12, then the A11 for Florence.

  • Pisa · 1h30 on the ground

78 km (48 miles), about an hour. Ninety minutes is enough for the Piazza dei Miracoli, the photograph and a coffee. Climbing the tower needs a timed ticket booked in advance and adds roughly an hour.

  • Florence

How long you get in Florence depends on how long your day is. The La Spezia legs alone are at least 2 hours 45 minutes of driving, before the stretch between Pisa and Florence.

  • La Spezia

149 km (93 miles) back from Florence, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours on a normal day, longer in August.

Is this the right day for you?

This is the longest day we sell, and it needs about eight to nine hours. We run it as a shore excursion from the ship within that window, planned backwards from your all-aboard time. The driving alone is at least 2 hours 45 minutes before the Pisa to Florence leg, so the day works by treating Pisa as a short stop and giving Florence the rest of it. If you have fewer hours, or you want more time on your feet than in the car, the Cinque Terre is nearer - about 1 hour 11 minutes of driving for two villages - and Portovenere is twenty minutes away.

See the shorter alternative

How far is Florence from La Spezia, honestly?

About 149 km, or 93 miles. One hour 45 minutes to two hours each way on a normal day, and two hours to two hours 25 minutes in high summer.

That number decides everything else here, and it is probably larger than the one you found online. Toll-road calculators quote La Spezia to Florence at around 1 hour 25 minutes. They are not lying; they measure toll gate to toll gate, which leaves out the drive from your hotel to the motorway and from the Florence exit to wherever you want to be. Across eight routes we checked, the honest door-to-door time ran between 8% and 49% longer than the toll-gate figure, with a median of about 23%.

If someone quotes you 1 hour 25 minutes for this drive, they are quoting you a road, not a journey.

And Pisa?

78 km, or 48 miles. About an hour, and 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 25 in high season. Motorway from the edge of La Spezia, and the airport and the Piazza dei Miracoli are a few minutes apart at the far end.

Pisa is genuinely close. Florence is not. That difference is the whole of the planning problem.

Is Pisa and Florence too much for one day?

It depends entirely on how many hours you have. The round trip La Spezia to Pisa to Florence and home is at least 2 hours 45 minutes of driving, and that figure does not include the Pisa to Florence leg itself. That is the one stretch of the day we publish no time for; the drive time we work to is set out in your written quote, before anything is booked.

On a full day from a hotel on this coast, away by eight and back for dinner, it is a good day on comfortable motorway. From a cruise ship we run it in about eight to nine hours, timed backwards from all aboard. It is still the tightest day we sell: if you have the hours for only one of the two cities, take Florence, and if you have half a day, go west to the Cinque Terre or Portovenere instead.

Where exactly does the car stop in Pisa?

On Via Cammeo or Via Andrea Pisano, about 500 m from the Piazza dei Miracoli. That is five to seven minutes on flat pavement, with no steps and no shuttle.

This is the one advantage of a car over a coach you can check for yourself. Coaches are not permitted on Via Cammeo. They are directed to the free coach park on Via Pietrasantina, roughly 2 km from the monuments, which costs a shuttle bus or a walk of about half an hour at each end of the visit.

One honest limit: the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, which runs the cathedral, the baptistery and the tower, publishes no driving directions at all, and the Comune’s pages on the restricted zone were unavailable when we checked. So we will not state Pisa’s ZTL hours here.

Where does the car stop in Florence?

Florence is not closed to cars, it is permissioned, which is a different and more workable thing. But it means the honest answer is “we confirm your specific address when you book”, not a promise made on a web page.

What is fixed:

ZTL sectorsFive: A, B, O, F and G
HoursMonday to Friday 07:30–20:00; Saturday 07:30–16:00; off on Sundays and public holidays
Summer night ZTLThursday, Friday and Saturday nights, 23:00 to 03:00, from early April to early October
Hotel routeA hotel inside the zone registers your plate with the municipal police before the camera sees it, and up to three hours are allowed to set down
Fallback car parksParterre at Piazza della Libertà, on the boundary of the zone, plus Beccaria and Sant’Ambrogio

What is not fixed: Florence is drafting its first regulation for private-hire vehicles since 1997. The draft would reserve stable access to the restricted zone to firms licensed within the Città Metropolitana di Firenze, charge everyone else per entry, and cap stops in the historic center at thirty minutes. It is a draft, it is contested, and it is live now.

Prime Drive is licensed in La Spezia, so a flat promise of your Florence hotel door is not something we will make on a web page. We check the arrangement for your exact address when you book, and tell you where the car will be if the answer is a car park two hundred meters outside the gate.

Do I need a guide in Florence?

For the ticketed monuments, yes. Your driver gets you to the right door and is waiting where you agreed; inside the Uffizi, a licensed guide is what turns three rooms into a morning. We put customers in touch with local licensed guides on request, and doing the day with a driver alone is an entirely normal way to book.

Admissions are not part of the fare, so book the Uffizi and the Accademia yourself, well ahead if you can. Both sell out, both use timed entry, and the slot you hold shapes the whole day.

Which way round do you drive the day?

Pisa on the way out, Florence for the long middle of the day, and the motorway home in the evening. Pisa sits on the route between La Spezia and Florence, so stopping there first costs almost nothing in extra driving, and it puts the ninety-minute stop at the fresh end of the day rather than the tired end.

Does this fit a cruise port day?

Yes. We run Pisa and Florence as a shore excursion of about eight to nine hours from the ship, and the whole day is planned backwards from your all-aboard time rather than forwards from the gangway.

It is still the longest day we sell, and the arithmetic should be in front of you: at least 2 hours 45 minutes of driving, plus the Pisa to Florence leg. Then add getting off the ship, the port shuttle, and the security check on the way back in.

What makes it fit is that the car is yours for the day. There is no meeting point to find, no coach to wait for and no second shuttle at the end: we collect you at the cruise terminal, Pisa is a short stop on the way, and Florence gets the long middle of the day.

  • On a call of ten hours or more, or an overnight, the day is comfortable and you choose how long to stay in Florence.
  • On a call of eight or nine hours, it works, but it is a driving day with two good stops rather than a slow one. We will tell you honestly what that looks like before you book.
  • On anything shorter, the Cinque Terre is 28 to 46 minutes away rather than an hour and three quarters, and Portovenere is twenty minutes. Those are the days that fit.

What does the day include, and what do I pay for myself?

The day is a car and driver for the itinerary you agree, up to 8 passengers, with pickup and drop-off at the address you give us and 15 minutes of waiting included. Italian, English and Russian are spoken in the car, and Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and American Express are accepted.

What you pay for yourself: museum and monument admissions, timed-entry reservations and tower tickets, meals, and a licensed guide if you want one inside the monuments.

The price for the day, what it covers and the cancellation terms are set out in writing with your quote, which comes back within 24 hours, and they are agreed before anything is booked.

Questions about this trip

How far is Florence from La Spezia?

About 149 km (93 miles), and 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours each way on a normal day. In high season allow 2 hours to 2 hours 25 minutes. Toll-road calculators quote around 1 hour 25 minutes, because they measure toll gate to toll gate and ignore the drive to and from the motorway at each end.

Can we really do Pisa and Florence in one day?

It needs a full day, and we run it in about eight to nine hours. The round trip is at least 2 hours 45 minutes of driving before the Pisa to Florence leg is counted. From a hotel on this coast it works comfortably; from a cruise ship we build the day backwards from your all-aboard time, with Pisa as a short stop and Florence as the long middle of the day.

Where does the car stop in Pisa?

On Via Cammeo or Via Andrea Pisano, about 500 m from the Piazza dei Miracoli: five to seven minutes on flat pavement, with no steps. Coaches are not allowed there at all and are sent to the free park on Via Pietrasantina about 2 km out, which costs a coach party a shuttle or a half-hour walk at each end of the visit.

Can you drop us at our hotel in central Florence?

We confirm that for your specific address at the time of booking, and we would rather do that than promise it now. Florence is not closed to cars, it is permissioned: five ZTL sectors with camera gates, open Monday to Friday 07:30 to 20:00 and Saturday 07:30 to 16:00, free on Sundays and public holidays. Access depends on the address and on the permit arrangement in force.

Is the driver a tour guide?

No, and in Italy that is a legal line rather than a technicality. Guiding inside museums, churches and monuments requires a licensed tour guide, which is a different qualification. Your driver drives, gets you to the right door at the right time and knows the city, but stays outside the ticket barrier. We can put you in touch with a licensed guide for Florence or Pisa on request.

Which way round do you drive the day?

Pisa first, going out, then Florence, is the usual shape. Pisa is on the way and is a short stop; Florence is the far end and deserves the bulk of the day. Going the other way puts the Pisa stop at the tired end of the afternoon.

Is Pisa worth stopping for at all?

For ninety minutes, for most people, yes. The Piazza dei Miracoli is genuinely extraordinary and it is small; you can see it properly in an hour and a half. Plenty of seasoned travelers find the surrounding streets a tourist trap and say so. If you have half a day rather than a whole one, Florence alone is the better use of it.
